Establishing Learner Centred Practices: UDL and Active Learning Strategies - IN-PERSON ONLY
This interactive session is designed to support faculty in shifting from instructor-centred approaches to dynamic, learner-centred teaching practices. Grounded in the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and active learning, this workshop will explore practical strategies to create inclusive, engaging, and accessible learning environments that better meet the diverse needs of today’s learners.
Participants will examine how UDL principles—providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression—can be intentionally embedded into course design and delivery. The session will also highlight active learning strategies that promote student participation, critical thinking, and deeper learning.
Through hands-on activities, reflection, and peer discussion, faculty will identify opportunities to redesign elements of their own courses to enhance student agency, reduce barriers to learning, and foster equity in the classroom. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical tools and adaptable techniques to implement learner-centred practices in their teaching.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the core principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Identify barriers to learning and UDL strategies to increase accessibility and inclusion
- Identify a variety of active learning strategies to enhance student engagement and participation
- Redesign at least one learning activity or assessment using learner-centred approaches
